"Fence-jumper"

From Maria Burnham a.k.a. @JLLTMaria on Twitter:

"Even though he's kidding, I am not a fan when my co-worker calls me a 'fence-jumper'. ‪#bisexual"

Preach it sister!

Stories Of Faith & Identity

Here's a couple of more thought-provoking articles for the day; they deal with LGBTQ, etc. identity and matters of faith and religion.

First up is an article from back in February from the Rev. Dr. Janet Edwards, a minister in Presbyterian Church USA.  She confronts five questions about her sexual orientation and identity:
  1. Aren't you really a lesbian who can't admit it?
  2. How can you claim to be Christian who believes in the Bible when you live a promiscuous lifestyle?
  3. How can your husband stand for your confession that you are bisexual? (has my favorite answer)
  4. If you're married to a man, why does talking about being bisexual matter? Aren't you just seeking attention?
  5. How can you, as a bisexual minister, be a teacher and model of morality, especially sexual morality, to the young people in the church?
Her honesty about her bisexuality and faith is refreshing on many levels.

Finally, here is a story about a Southern Baptist father and his family's struggle with the realization of their son/brother admitting he's gay, the son/brother becoming a victim of AIDS in the 1990s, and what this all meant for the father's faith and participation in the church.  Quality feature writing and virtually no bias in this article.

Cheers!

Are Bisexuals Really A Minority?

An April 2011 study conducted by the Williams Institute found that the total number of self-identified bisexuals is apparently greater than the combined number of gay- and lesbian-identified people in the United States.

Numbers are of course hard to nail down, but this helps demonstrate that bisexuality is not a "phase," especially among women, who look likely to identify as bisexual than lesbian.  Bisexual men, on the other hand, remain a minority in the gay/bisexual community.

What do you think of these numbers?

Faith & Sexuality - Share Your Story!

Here's a message from one of my new favorite people on earth, Maria Burnham:

"Seeking Stories about Faith and Sexuality-share your experience!

Hi, all.  I am looking for your personal stories of faith, sexuality, reconciliations, struggles, and experiences.  Whether you have a message of hope to share, or you have lost your faith before or after coming out, I am interested in hearing your story.  I am compiling emails, letters, notes, and blogs from people from all over the world and from all different types of faith and religion. Be aware that I may use your experience in a future project, so indicate if you would like an alias.  If you do not want your story shared, but you still want to write it out and share with me, I will honor your privacy.  Send all emails to MariaComics@yahoo.com
1. When did you realize you were not heterosexual?
2. When you realized you were not heterosexual, were you attending a church or following a religion?
3. Were you raised in this religion or did you choose it later in life?
4. Did you ever feel like God (or whomever you follow) did not accept you? Did you feel like other members of the same faith did not accept you?  Did you have trouble accepting yourself?
5. Do you still follow the same faith?  Attend church?  Follow a different faith?  Or none at all?

Feel free to answer these questions indivually, or use them as a guideline in sharing your full experience.  I'd like to thank you in advance for taking the time to write your story out and share it with me.
If you are interested in my story at all, please see my comic at www.jesusloveslesbianstoo.com and read a brief intro on the Huffington Post at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maria-burnham/jesus-loves-lesbians-too_b_1132435.html"

Sex Coach

Have you ever felt like you could use a sex coach?  Or have you used one?  GQ recently wrote an article about sex coach/therapist Eric Amaranth.

This article is interesting and funny, if only because of the awkwardness the author felt at times while watching Amaranth at work.

Role/Play

Has anyone else seen this film? I've watched it twice in the past month. I really love the plot and the focused nature of the movie (there are only 6 or so actors seen during the entirety of the film). Check it out! It's even free on Hulu (for the time being).

Cheers!

Top 10 Cities for LGBTQ, etc. Singles to Find Marriage and Family

Chemistry.com, in honor of Pride Month, recently released their list of the top ten cities in the U.S. where LGBTQ, etc. people are looking to marry and have families.

The results are a little surprising.  Those in NYC should head east or west, Pittsburgh is the closest to the middle of the country, San Francisco does make the list (at #9), and the mid-Atlantic is ultimately the best place to be apparently.

Can anyone attest to the accuracy of these results?

Muxes

Check out this story from NPR posted yesterday.  It talks about the blurring of gender identity in Oaxaca, southern Mexico.

"The indigenous Zapotec culture of Oaxaca is not divided by the usual dichotomies: gay or straight, male or female. There's a commonly accepted third category of mixed gender — people called muxes. (said to derive from mujer — Spanish for "woman"). Some are men who live as women, or who identify beyond a single gender."

Has anyone else heard of this before?  Or what about similar concepts in other societies?

Masturbation

Apparently everyone does it, but almost no one talks about it.  That's right, I'm talking about masturbation.  C'mon, admit it, you do it.  You might be doing it right now.  I usually jack off at least once a day, if not more.

This recent article from the Huffington Post confronts the reasons why masturbation is so taboo and why we should be talking about it a lot more.

Cheers!
