Cheyenne Jackson's Newest Music Video

Check out Cheyenne Jackson's newest music video for his song "Don't Wanna Know":

He's not the most well-known artist, but he does have a strong fanbase and he seems to be moving into more into the mainstream light. Let's hope this video does some good to increase normal depictions of relationships among people, including LGBTQ, etc.

More Bisexual Politicians Elected.

I'm glad/proud to say that actually all out bisexuals seeking state and national levels offices, not just Kyrsten Sinema, were elected to their respective positions.

Congratulations to Angie Buhl, Kate Brown, Micah Kellner, and JoCasta Zamarripa. I'm glad bisexual visibility is slowly, but surely, increasing. Let's keep it up!

First Bisexual In Congress

Congrats to Kyrsten Sinema, newly elected representative to the U.S. Congress from Arizona; she is also the first bisexual person to be elected to Congress.

Sinema's election comes as part of a major victory for LGBTQ, etc. rights. The November 2012 election saw three states legalize same-sex marriage, one state put a stop to a marriage amendment, the election of the first LGBTQ, etc. person (lesbian Tammy Baldwin) to the Senate, five openly gay people elected to the House of Representatives, and the first openly transgendered person elected to the New Hampshire state assembly.

Rounding Out CBD

Here are a couple more articles to round out your time celebrating Bi Pride Day.

First, a message and reflection on Bi Pride Day from Faith Cheltenham again, the President of BiNet USA, via the Advocate.

Second, good news for bisexual visibility in the congressional races in Arizona. Kyrsten Sinema (mentioned in a previous post) has won the Democratic primaries and will be running in the new 9th District of Arizona. You can check out her campaign here (note: this is not any sort of endorsement for Sinema, just giving out the information).

Celebrate Bisexuality Day!

Happy Celebrate Bisexuality Day (CBD)! That's right, 23 Sept. is our special day.

BiNet USA is of course highlighting many of the events, history, and other relations surrounding CBD. Check out their latest blog post and perhaps you'll find something happening near you.

Also, Faith Cheltenham, President of BiNet USA, wrote this little piece up for the Huffington Post about how to come out as bisexual. A little humorous, but definitely relatable.

Hope everyone is able to celebrate today in their own way, whether you're an open and proud bisexual, still somewhat closeted, completely closeted, or still determining whether you are bi or not.

Cheers!

Google Apparently To Unblock "Bisexual"

Check out BiNet USA's latest blog post about the apparent overturn of Google's ban of the word "bisexual" in its algorithims. I just tried it and "bisexual" still doesn't work, but hopefully soon it will. Let me know when you find it does show up!

Openly Bisexual Politicians

Check out this post from Bialogue highlighting six state officials in the U.S. who are openly bisexual.

I'm not terribly surprised that five of them are women; while I wholeheartedly believe we need more women in politics, I also believe we need more visible open bisexual men in the public sphere to look up to. What do you think? I hope these people continue to do good things in their positions.

"Defriended Over A Wedding"

Check out this little blog post from evoL. It's from a straight man who celebrates the marriage of his little brother and his brother's now husband, but gets a negative reaction to the wedding in the process. Demonstrates the problems of the online 21st Century world we live in and once again makes us think where we put our priorities. I don't find it extremely eye-opening, but every little revelation counts, and just because I don't find it significant doesn't mean someone else won't.

Waymon Hudson's Latest Show on Bisexuality

Check out this article from the Huffington Post concerning the latest episode of Waymon Hudson's show on GayChicago TV. The focus of the latest episode is on bisexuality, biphobia, and bi-erasure.

So glad to see this topic finally being covered in a more mainstream LGBTQ, etc. media outlet (yes, you're reading that as an outlet that seemingly caters only to gays and lesbians).

Thank you Waymon for this much needed video. I appreciate it and your words of encouragement. Rock on.

More On The Circumsion Debate

Here's another story from the BBC concerning the recent controversy concerning circumsion in Germany. This time, the focus is on the U.S. and the long-standing tradition of circumsizing boys, which is contrary to most other nations. Very interesting read and continues the debate of the rights of the child versus the rights of the parent.

What do you say?

The Answer Is In Their Eyes

According to a study by Cornell University, it is possible to determine one's sexual orientation thanks to their eyes.

This was in an article on the Huffington Post, which stated that pupil dialation could be the key to "seeing" whether someone is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. The study found the results were more accurate with men than with women.

Doesn't sound the most scientific, but hey, it seems to make sense. What do you think?

Olympians

The 2012 Olympic Games in London are finally here! There is so much to celebrate, and one of them is the small, but increasing number of resilient athletes who are remaining true to themselves and saying they are part of the LGBTQ, etc. community.

This article and slideshow presents these 22 athletes, a majority of them women. This number is up from the 10 in 2008 in Beijing and 11 in 2004 in Athens.

"Google's Bisexual Problem"

Check this out: go to Google and type in "bisexual". The normal autocomplete does not appear. Find this weird? You're not the only one, and it's not just a problem with your computer: it's a problem with Google.

This article on the Huffington Post by Faith Cheltenham, President of BiNet USA, is beyond fantastic and further demonstrates just how much bisexuals are made invisible by society. Please read this and tell everyone you know about this, especially since this post won't show up automatically on Google. ;)

Circumsion: Whose Choice Is It?

Have you heard about the recent ruling by a German court that basically made circumsizing boys illegal? This has obviously caused an uproar in the German Muslim and Jewish communities, where circumsion is an essential part of their religious beliefs.

The BBC had this article that examined the situation in Germany, posing the question: "Is it a parent's right to choose?"

The court claims: "The child's body is permanently and irreparably changed by the circumcision. This change conflicts with the child's interest of later being able to make his own decision on his religious affiliation." One newspaper compared circumsion to female genital mutilation.

I'm not convinced by these arguments. I'm cut and certainly don't remember such bodily harm when I was only a few days old (besides, coming out of the womb is a pretty big shock to a baby's body as well). I also agree with three arguments against the ruling in the article:
  1. It warns that circumsion procedures could be carried out in more dangerous situations now, putting children in harm's way.
  2. What about piercing the ears of little girls (or boys)? Isn't that a similar situation where there is bodily harm done without a child's understanding consent?
  3. What about the Christian ritual of infant baptism? Isn't that forcing a child into a religion they are not free to choose?
Obviously I'm fine with circumsion; I believe it is a personal choice by the parents to make for their child whether to perform circumsion or not; after all, no child is able to make any sort of decisions when they're infants, and the parents are parents and guardians for a reason.

What do you think? Did the German court make the correct decision or have they taken things too far?

All About Semen

Thought you knew everything you needed to about semen?

Might want to check your certainty. Gizmodo put up a great, albeit brief article highlighting the important facts about semen. The article discusses things like its disrespected past and the fact eating a banana will probably not affect its taste.

OSU's Brutus Bisexual?

Did anyone else see this story about some crazy in Findlay, Ohio calling on the state to change the state tree because buckeyes have male, female, and bisexual flowers on the same tree? Guess he just outed OSU's mascot Brutus.

I knew there were a lot of narrow-minded people in Ohio, but this guy is beyond ridiculous. As an Ohio native, I now have more reason to be proud to be called a buckeye: we're both bi!

Fighting Tommy Riley

Check out the movie Fighting Tommy Riley. This trailer makes it seem like this is just another boxing movie; it's not. There is so much more to it. Newcomer (at the time) J.P. Davis (who also wrote the story) joins Eddie Jones in this fantastic film about the troubled lives we all lead and how redemption can come from the most unlikely places.

I randomly stumbled upon this film years ago once at a movie rental place in the rural Midwest, and much to my surprise fell in love with it, despite the fact I don't really care for boxing. To be honest, I probably picked it out because of Davis' hot bod on the DVD cover.

It's a shame J.P. Davis' career didn't take off more after this film; perhaps it will one of these days.

Stories Of Faith & Identity

Here's a couple of more thought-provoking articles for the day; they deal with LGBTQ, etc. identity and matters of faith and religion.

First up is an article from back in February from the Rev. Dr. Janet Edwards, a minister in Presbyterian Church USA.  She confronts five questions about her sexual orientation and identity:
  1. Aren't you really a lesbian who can't admit it?
  2. How can you claim to be Christian who believes in the Bible when you live a promiscuous lifestyle?
  3. How can your husband stand for your confession that you are bisexual? (has my favorite answer)
  4. If you're married to a man, why does talking about being bisexual matter? Aren't you just seeking attention?
  5. How can you, as a bisexual minister, be a teacher and model of morality, especially sexual morality, to the young people in the church?
Her honesty about her bisexuality and faith is refreshing on many levels.

Finally, here is a story about a Southern Baptist father and his family's struggle with the realization of their son/brother admitting he's gay, the son/brother becoming a victim of AIDS in the 1990s, and what this all meant for the father's faith and participation in the church.  Quality feature writing and virtually no bias in this article.

Are Bisexuals Really A Minority?

An April 2011 study conducted by the Williams Institute found that the total number of self-identified bisexuals is apparently greater than the combined number of gay- and lesbian-identified people in the United States.

Numbers are of course hard to nail down, but this helps demonstrate that bisexuality is not a "phase," especially among women, who look likely to identify as bisexual than lesbian.  Bisexual men, on the other hand, remain a minority in the gay/bisexual community.

What do you think of these numbers?

Faith & Sexuality - Share Your Story!

Here's a message from one of my new favorite people on earth, Maria Burnham:

"Seeking Stories about Faith and Sexuality-share your experience!

Hi, all.  I am looking for your personal stories of faith, sexuality, reconciliations, struggles, and experiences.  Whether you have a message of hope to share, or you have lost your faith before or after coming out, I am interested in hearing your story.  I am compiling emails, letters, notes, and blogs from people from all over the world and from all different types of faith and religion. Be aware that I may use your experience in a future project, so indicate if you would like an alias.  If you do not want your story shared, but you still want to write it out and share with me, I will honor your privacy.  Send all emails to MariaComics@yahoo.com
1. When did you realize you were not heterosexual?
2. When you realized you were not heterosexual, were you attending a church or following a religion?
3. Were you raised in this religion or did you choose it later in life?
4. Did you ever feel like God (or whomever you follow) did not accept you? Did you feel like other members of the same faith did not accept you?  Did you have trouble accepting yourself?
5. Do you still follow the same faith?  Attend church?  Follow a different faith?  Or none at all?

Feel free to answer these questions indivually, or use them as a guideline in sharing your full experience.  I'd like to thank you in advance for taking the time to write your story out and share it with me.
If you are interested in my story at all, please see my comic at www.jesusloveslesbianstoo.com and read a brief intro on the Huffington Post at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maria-burnham/jesus-loves-lesbians-too_b_1132435.html"

Top 10 Cities for LGBTQ, etc. Singles to Find Marriage and Family

Chemistry.com, in honor of Pride Month, recently released their list of the top ten cities in the U.S. where LGBTQ, etc. people are looking to marry and have families.

The results are a little surprising.  Those in NYC should head east or west, Pittsburgh is the closest to the middle of the country, San Francisco does make the list (at #9), and the mid-Atlantic is ultimately the best place to be apparently.

Can anyone attest to the accuracy of these results?

Muxes

Check out this story from NPR posted yesterday.  It talks about the blurring of gender identity in Oaxaca, southern Mexico.

"The indigenous Zapotec culture of Oaxaca is not divided by the usual dichotomies: gay or straight, male or female. There's a commonly accepted third category of mixed gender — people called muxes. (said to derive from mujer — Spanish for "woman"). Some are men who live as women, or who identify beyond a single gender."

Has anyone else heard of this before?  Or what about similar concepts in other societies?

Masturbation

Apparently everyone does it, but almost no one talks about it.  That's right, I'm talking about masturbation.  C'mon, admit it, you do it.  You might be doing it right now.  I usually jack off at least once a day, if not more.

This recent article from the Huffington Post confronts the reasons why masturbation is so taboo and why we should be talking about it a lot more.

Dating Frustrations

Sometimes I find it beyond frustrating trying to date, hit on, or hook up with someone.  You never know who really might be interested, who is just playing games, and who is just looking for some ass and cares about nothing else.  There are days I feel that being bisexual makes it that much harder, because almost anyone who walks by could be potentially be something more.  There have been more days than I care to admit when I've wanted to say "Fuck it all!" and give up on relationships.  And then I go out again a couple of weeks later to start all over again, hoping that this time it'll be different.

Anyone else have similar problems?  Or good advice on how to overcome some of these problems?
